Title: Luminous Infrared Galaxies from a multiwavelength perspective

Abstract: After the launch of the IRAS satellite in 1983, a new type of galaxies was discovered to have an abnormally high infrared luminosity. These sources, named Luminous and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs, respectively), dominate the cosmic infrared background, and hence their study is crucial to understand galaxy formation and evolution. What are (U)LIRGs and what is powering them? In this talk I will go through some of the results of my PhD Thesis, consisting of a multiwavelength study of (U)LIRGs in the local Universe at different spatial scales. The work is focused on the properties of massive starbursts, the contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the interplay between both phenomena.
